Carthage Area Hospital Considering New Building

Carthage Area Hospital is considering building a brand new $65 million hospital and donating its existing campus in Carthage along with buildings in Carthage and West Carthage.

The project reportedly depends on certain funding and if the hospital can obtain what's called a rural hospital designation, meaning the hospital has to be in what's considered a rural area, which means it needs to be outside village limits. Officials are seeking $25 million from the state Health Department for construction of a replacement hospital and attached rural health center. Hospital officials say they're evaluating the best possible site for the campus. Hospital officials say renovating the current 56 year old campus would cost $44 million, take 10 years, and interrupt services.
